Eat in Edinburgh

Eat in Edinburgh

Maybe it’s just me, but I definitely think food is one of the best things about traveling. And while visiting Scotland, I had some of the best food I have eaten in my entire life.

I never thought I’d be the kind of person to like haggis, but I was 100% wrong. Until this day, I still couldn’t tell you what’s in it. However, if you eat an American hot dog you can eat anything, right?

Below are some of the best places to eat in Edinburgh:

1. Sheep Heid Inn

During my time in Scotland, most of the plans were already laid out due to the fact that the program was through my University. Sheep Heid Inn was one of them, and I am beyond thankful that Dr. Grant and Dr. Thompson were able to set this experience up for my entire group.

Maybe it was because the Queen was there the week before, maybe it was because it was my last night in Scotland, or maybe it was because I was starving…. But this was by far the most surreal experience that I have ever had in a restaurant.

Everything about the place made it special and the food was to die for. I ended up ordering the Balmoral Chicken (chicken breast stuffed with haggis and wrapped in bacon) and for dessert I ordered the Bramley Apple & Blackberry Shortbread Crumble with Custard.

I can honestly say I still have dreams about this place, it was that good. If you’re visiting Edinburgh, Sheep Heid Inn is a must.

2. The Abbey

Why is this place one of the best? Probably because of their sex on the beach drinks and sticky toffee pudding (with vanilla ice cream). I’d be lying if I said I didn’t go back to this place at least two times during my trip just for the sticky toffee pudding (pictured below).

While visiting, I also decided it might be a good idea to try a sandwich or something. So being a typical American, I went straight for the BLT. In my defense, the bacon in Scotland is so much better than anything in the US.

3. The World’s End

Before traveling to Scotland, there were two things that everyone told me I needed to try. 1. Haggis 2. Fish and chips.

With that being said, I Googled “best place to get fish and chips in Scotland”. What did I know, World’s End popped up and I decided I needed to go.

Who knew when the Scots say “chips” they actually mean french fries, because I surely didn’t until the plate was lying right in front of me.

In addition to the fish and chips, I ended up ordering dessert as well. If you know me, you know that I believe that dessert is the most important part of the meal. Although I wasn’t a fan of the Scottish dessert Cranachan (whisky, raspberries, whipped cream), I highly recommend it if you love whisky.

4. The Elephant House

So maybe the food was not the best I’ve ever had, but for any Harry Potter fan, this is the place to be. I ordered some sort of sandwich and then ran straight to the bathroom (and not because I was sick). It was the first time I have ever ran to the bathroom out of excitement.

For those of you who don’t know, The Elephant House is where J.K. Rowling wrote the first several Harry Potter books. Don’t worry, taking a trip to the bathroom doesn’t mean you have to flush yourself down the toilet just to get to the Ministry of Magic (Harry Potter fans will understand). But instead, you will stand there and admire the words and artwork people have graffitied on the walls.

Be prepared to wait in a line in order to even get in, but the experience is well worth it. This café is beautiful and it is surreal to see where someone as talented as J.K. Rowling started out.

5. The Greenmantle

The Greenmantle doesn’t exactly say, ‘visit me I have really good food” from the outside, but I have never been one to judge a book by its cover.

On the inside this pub is pretty tiny, but it has wonderful food/ burgers. I included this place because it is a great stop on a rainy day. I ordered Chili with a side of fries, it ended up being just what I needed. The service was great and my two friends and I ended up finding the perfect little place on our first day in the city.
