Ship tour: Semester at Sea

DECK 4 AND BELOW

This was the deck that I called home for 3.5 months with my roommate Hana. We shared an outside double which had a window… honestly, I think I probably could’ve done without it since I spent so much time on the upper decks. Nonetheless, 4031 holds a very dear place in my heart.

It is notable to add that I really didn’t venture to any of the lower decks, as they mainly house the crew. Deck 3 also had the spa, medical clinic, indoor pool, and some student cabins.

DECK 5

Now working our way up to the 5th Deck which was more student cabins and the reception desk, where we could find field class and general ship information.

DECK 6

Deck 6 is probably one of the more important decks, holding Kaisersall which is where we took our required Global Studies course and had all of our preport meetings. It also has the library (the Lili Marleen) and the Berlin Dining Hall, and the indoor cardio gym/sauna. My favorite hangout spot for alone time was on the aft mini deck that sits right above the water.

Deck 7

Houses the upper Kaisersaal, campus store, hair salon, special dining, and another outdoor deck where most of the faculty hung out.

Deck 8

I didn’t spend too much time on deck 8 except to take a tour of the captain’s bridge, use the outdoor gym/deck, and attend class.

Deck 9

Deck 9 is probably the most important deck, because it’s where all the fun happens. We’ll start from the aft of the ship and work our way forward. At the back of the ship sits the lido deck, outdoor grill, and lido dining hall where most people eat their meals on a nice day. Towards the center of the deck lies the pool and pool bar. Then we get to the front of the ship where the lido terrace is and all of the game nights happen. Possibly my favorite part of the ship is the forward deck where people gathered at sunrise to pull into each port.

PS. technically there’s a little mini deck on the very top of the ship that holds the basketball court and a little standing area… so is there a deck 10? tbd
